House Makeover Impressions – What Story Is Your House Telling?

The overall effect of the photos is a WOW, that looks fantastic. But let’s not leave it at that.
I want to dig a little deeper. Let’s actually spot the differences and I’ll let you in on a few little secrets as to the reasons behind the changes.

Items removed:-
1. Photo’s remind people that it’s someone else’s home. You want them to immediately imagine this as their space.
2. Tissue box – When was the last time you used tissues? When you were sick or sad ? Tissues had to go!
3. Phone – Sleep interruption is caused by phones and children. It is best to keep the atmosphere as relaxing as possible.
4. Glass table top – The room is warmer without the glass top on the table.
5. Books – Sometimes books are great to use…but they should always be beautiful had backed treasures.

Items Introduced:-
6. Lamp creates height on the table and an ambient light over the pillows and table.
7. Pillows & Cushions add warm inviting color and five star luxury.
8. Jug, tumbler & tray eludes to being waited on – pure relaxation.
9. Flowers bring life, color & fragrance (if they are real).
10. Candle – bring warmth, color, light and fragrance.

Call me what you will, but I can’t help notice properties that are ripe for a house makeover! I have just come in from a lovely evening stroll. It was suppose to be faster than a stroll, you know, to get the heart rate up (for 30 minutes at least 4 times a week!). But as my mind started buzzing with great makeover ideas my legs slowed to compensate.

It was either the aproned lady standing at the window with her hands on her hips or her little yappa dog going for it next to her that made realize I had completely stopped! Not only that but was peering and craning to take in all the details.

I briefly considered letting her know that I was simply making a mental note of a handful of things she could do to give her house an amazing transformation and she could do it all with change from a few hundred dollars!

Fortunately my feet seemed to take charge and I took off at surprising speed. For the first time during the whole excursion my heart rate increased impressively! And I only glanced back once to confirm my suspicions about the rose garden.

Now I hope I’m not giving the wrong impression about this house, which in itself was really quite lovely. Brick, about 15 years old, double garage, large windows and beautiful gables. This house was without a doubt loved and cared for. So what am I going on about? Well, the house needed to be, what I call ‘classed up‘.

How Does One Class Up A House?

The best way class up is in the details…to describe this let’s continue with the example house at hand.

1. The front door mat looked as old as the house. Investing in a new door mat regularly gives your home reason to be proud when meeting and greeting.
2. Garage doors often take up 1/3 and even 1/2 of the house frontage. In this case the garage door took up half the house frontage. A good clean or even a paint freshens and brings the house into the current decade. (Well half the house at least.)
3. The 3 windows facing the street were dressed with different window treatments. That’s the equivalent you one eye lid drooping after a big night. Just by neatening curtains and making sure they match from the street adds huge ‘class up’ value.
4. Oh yes the roses. Standard roses. All their stakes where crooked and uneven heights. Tidying edging and in fact removing some old fashioned edging, trimming, planting mass color of ground perennials ‘class up’ your curb appeal.

Obviously I didn’t venture in this particular house however the same principles apply to both inside and out. Take the time to stand back and take in all the detail. View your space objectively. If unsure ask questions and learn from others.
